McKenzie taking it one game at a time

Last Saturday saw Robbie McKenzie make his two hundredth Gillingham appearance in the win over Crewe Alexandra, and the double centurion has been talking to KSN.

“It was a proud moment for me and my family,” McKenzie told us at this week’s briefing.

“Hopefully I can get a few more than just the two hundred! From when I have joined, I feel like the club has come a long way on and off the pitch. We are growing to a “modern day” club and I feel like we are taking steps in the right direction.”

We asked McKenzie of any standout moments in his two hundred appearances and after thinking he said, “I think it’s my first Gillingham goal at Rochdale away is one of my highlights!”

“The vibe in the camp is positive after our good start to the season, but it is just the start, we need to keep it going and go to Oldham at the weekend. We know it’s going to be a tough place to go but we will go with our game plan and try and implement it.”

“I find it quite easy to focus on the next game as that’s the only one you can really affect and literally the only thing that matters is the next game.”

“The ones that have gone, have gone and the ones that are coming, we will get to them and cross that hurdle as and when.”

“There is a really good positive vibe about the place at the minute; hopefully we can continue that and stride on over the season and not just make it a quick start that tails off! Let’s keep it for the full season.”

“I think we just need to stay levelheaded about things and again, take each game as it comes and cross each bridge when we get to it!”

“League Two has always been open and anyone can beat anyone in this League; I have said it numerous times. On the day, anyone can go to wherever and beat whoever, it’s always been an open League; MK Dons may have spent big in the summer, but I am sure a lot of people are going to go to their place and try and beat them, it is going to be an interesting year.”

Reflecting on the past week’s two wins at MEMS Priestfield against Chesterfield and Crewe, McKenzie said, “Two great wins, but it’s still only three points for a win; doesn’t matter how many goals scored, but it was nice and is all that matters!”

“I do feel that it was a long wait for the win like we did against Chesterfield, and I feel that it was a really nice way to do it, and I think that the fans were waiting for that for a long time and I am glad that we were able to give it to them.”

“Obviously giving them something back is great as we feel the frustrations as everything we do is for them at the end of the day, so giving back to them like that was a really nice feeling!”

“I was delighted to get a new contract so quickly in the summer. In my head I always wanted to stay at here as I felt like what Gareth (Ainsworth) was going to bring to the club and what he wanted to do matched what I wanted to do here.”
