Robbie McKenzie is looking for a strong end to the season, as the Gillingham midfielder goes in search of a new deal at MEMS Priestfield.

The midfielder, who has been an intregral part of the club since 2021, is in the squad to face Cheltenham on Good Friday and all being well, AFC Wimbledon on Easter Monday, and spoke to KSN at this week’s briefing about what lies ahead.
McKenzie told us, “The win last week was a while coming and the feeling after Dacky (Bradley Dack) scored, was really nice! It was good to be unbeaten, albeit with draws, but to finally get the win was great, and it was a nice moment for Dacky as well. I was next to him when the goal went in, although I couldn’t catch him when he scored…”
“It’s eight games unbeaten now as well, but there’s nothing but positives since the Gaffer took over, we just want to keep it going and see how long we can keep on the run for!”
“We’ve been in games for sure, playing well in some and not so well in others, so there are positive vibes about the place every day!”
McKenzie made a rare appearance on the subs bench at the weekend – he explained his absence as he told us, “The Gaffer explained that he wanted to look at some of the other players – there have been a lot of games and he wanted to see different people which is fine and I understand that and take it.”
“I always want to play no matter what, but if that’s what the Gaffer has on his mind, I must respect that!”
“There are lots of different reasons for us within the group that we have to do well until the end of the season individually and as a team, as if we finish the season strong, you always go into the summer in a stronger place and hopefully pick that form up when we come back in for pre-season and going into next season.”
“I’ve tried to stay as consistent as I can throughout the season, whenever I have played, and do as much as I can to help the team in the games that I have played and hopefully I have done that this season,” McKenzie told us after making more than thirty appearances this season for three different managers.
McKenzie is out of contract in the summer and was asked about the future; he told us, “I would stay at Gillingham, no problem, but we will have to see what happens over the summer.”
“I’ve seen a bit of everything in the five years that I have been here. I’m sure discussions will take place behind the scenes, so we’ll respect that and just finish the season playing football.”
“We want good performances to end the season as well as results in the style of play that the Gaffer wants to see and if we get that and the win… that’ll be great!”
“He wants more energy and pressing and I feel that this team can do it, we will just need to adapt to that and I’m sure we will be fine.”
