Welling United face a trip to fellow strugglers Canvey Island this weekend as they embark on a potentially pivotal week in their relegation battle in the Isthmian Premier with manager Ryan Maxwell taking it one game at a time.

After Saturday’s trip to Canvey, the Wings head for Aveley on Monday night before hosting Hashtag United next weekend thus facing the two sides either side of the twenty second placed Wings – Canvey (twenty-third) and Hashtag (twenty-first).
Then the form side of the division in Aveley and when boss Ryan Maxwell spoken to KSN this week, he was under no illusions as to the task ahead for his side – he said, “Let’s be honest, every week for us at the moment is a big week because of our position.
“It’s always about the three points and whoever the opposition we face is immaterial because at the end of the day we are trying to get out of the scenario we are in, and you cannot pick and choose who you are hoping to beat.”
“So, every game becomes the same and on Saturday we are away to Canvey Island who are in a very similar position to ourselves, so we know it will be a really tough game. We are fully aware of what type of game it is going to be and the importance of it – we know what their pitch is like, we know how they play, so we are well versed on what is coming but at the end of the day we have to make sure that we are right in how we play and what we do that we know are effective.”
Last weekend, the Wings kept their first Isthmian League clean sheer of the season when a solitary goal from defender Lekan Majoyegbe on debut beat Wingate & Finchley at Park View Road. “It was a big, big positive for us,” admitted Maxwell.
“Lekan was one of four debutants of Saturday so that was positive too especially as I thought we were could have been a bit disjointed and lack cohesion. In actual fact we were far from that – well drilled and looked very together which was a fantastic plus for the boys and hopefully the best is yet to come from those individuals. It was a great home win – we start the year with a clean sheet and there were loads of positives to take from Saturday. Wingate only had one good chance, and we would settle for that, if we limited every opposition to one good chance.”
“It is going to be tough to go to Aveley Monday night as they are absolutely flying at the moment – momentum breeds confidence so they will be a confident group especially as its at their place. But we will look at Aveley after Saturday as we really have to focus on Canvey – it’s one game at a time attitude and we have to deal with Canvey first and make sure that we are absolutely spot on for Saturday.”
“There is a short turn around between the games so we will look to recover pretty quickly and ultimately, I know that will be a key factor in how we perform as the squad is quite thin, but we are still looking to possibly add one or two more to it.”
