Mavericks crowned Conference champions

Canterbury based American Football team the East Kent Mavericks added a ninth win on their unbeaten season last weekend, with a 37 – 21 victory in their semi-final match up against the highly regarded Somerset Wyverns.

With Somerset scoring on the opening drive of the game, the Mavs rallied to lead the Wyverns at the end of a closely fought first quarter, extending their advantage by half time with good performances on both sides of the ball that put the score at 21 – 15.

East Kent made the stronger start after the break, with successive drives down the field giving them a three score lead, but Somerset could only manage one touchdown and couldn’t convert the extra point. By the final whistle, the Mavericks were in the end-zone again, only for the referees to wave it away on a penalty as the clock ran out.

Having finished the regular season at 7-0-1 (Wins, Losses, Ties), the Mavs entered the playoffs as Division Champions and the Southern Conference #1 seed, a position they’ve backed up with two strong performances en route to the Southern Conference title and a place in the BAFA Division 2 Championship Game.

The BAFA Division 2 Championship Game takes place on Saturday 16th September at Coventry Rugby Club as part of the Britbowl XXXV weekend. Tickets are available direct on the Coventry Rugby Club website.
