Martin disappointed with Welling loss
Martin disappointed with Welling loss

Early season difficulties continued for Welling United as they stumbled to an Isthmian League Premier Division defeat at home to Lewes leaving manager Lee Martin disappointed.

After the game, Welling manager Lee Martin said: “I felt that we were the better side and had the better chances but we’ve come away with a one-nil loss. Key moments again, but I can’t keep harping on about it.

“Players need to do their roles within a team.” he continued. “We’re massively in need of a win and it seems that everything (for the opposition) is going in, edge of the box and a helluva finish but ultimately, we’ve got to look at ourselves. We’ve had chances there. We take our chances and we win the game.”

Bad luck is not a factor according to Martin. He said: “The harder you work, the luckier you become and, at the minute, I don’t think we’re working nearly hard enough. I don’t think we’re doing the basics well enough and we’re not doing our roles and responsibilities well enough.”

However, Martin was happy enough that his team followed their instructions. He confirmed: “I thought the boys followed everything around the game plan today and, at times, looked a decent side but we can’t seem to win at the minute and we need to address why. It is fine margins at the moment.”

Both home matches have been only goal defeats and Martin doesn’t believe that they are too far away. He said: “We’re getting close. One-nils twice now but on key moments we’ve got to be better. If we’re going to pass the buck and have a blame game it’s not going to work.

“Players need to take their criticism. I’m all for praising them, and I will do that when the time’s right but at this moment in time the players need to look at themselves as we’ve got no points out of the three (matches) if the result stands from the game with Aveley.”
