Martin backs Gills for success

Gillingham defender Joe Martin believes his side are ready to crank up the pressure on the top three despite a home slip.

Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Bradford City lifted Andy Hessenthaler’s men into the play-off spots as they stretched their unbeaten home run to six matches.

And despite failing to beat a side who have not won away all season in League Two, Martin thinks Gillingham can challenge for an automatic promotion spot.

“Quality-wise, our squad is as good as anyone in this league,” he said.

“We’ve got strength in depth so it’s just a matter of fighting to try to get out of this division.

“It’s never easy because everyone can beat each other but we just need more consistency and the results will come.”

Top scorer Jo Kuffour almost gave them a dream start when his acrobatic effort struck the post.

But Bradford should have taken the lead just before the half-hour when James Hanson was denied by Ross Flitney.

Ricky Ravenhill came close to breaking the deadlock in the second half before the visitors survived a goalmouth scramble to ensure a share of the spoils.

“I know how hard a place Gillingham is to come and we have done well to come away with a point,” said Bradford skipper and former Gills man Michael Flynn.

Gillingham now switch their attention to the FA Cup on Saturday as they try and make their way past Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road.

Hessenthaler will be without loan stars Kuffour and West Ham’s Frank Nouble after they were refused permission to play by their parent clubs.

But the Gills boss said: “It doesn’t help having to keep chopping and changing all the time but that’s life.

“We’ve got a good enough squad and I fancy us to go there and win the game.”
