Martin announced as Gills captain

Ady Pennock has named Lee Martin as the new Team Captain of Gillingham Football Club.

The 30-year-old, who signed for the club last summer, was told the news before Thursday’s pre-match press conference and will now lead the team out prior to kick-off against Doncaster Rovers on Saturday.

Speaking to the media he said: “Obviously it’s a real honour; I’m delighted.”

“Having come back from a serious injury I now feel good and am looking forward to the weekend.”

“I think [as Captain] you’ve got to be vocal on the pitch, communicate with the manager and make sure the boys are all right.”

Martin only featured 17 times last season after suffering a horrific ankle injury against Leyton Orient in one of his first outings for the Gills, but he returned to action quicker than expected and, based on what he’s seen, Pennock is pleased with his choice.

He said: “Lee possesses all of the qualities a Captain should have, he has the experience and is constantly talking to the boys on the pitch.

“That said, everyone has a part to play and we want everybody to be leaders when they cross the white line.”
