Luzon gets work permit

Guy Luzon travelled to the UK Border Agency offices in Sheffield to finally obtain his work permit on Thursday.

Guy Luzon

It seemed strange that Luzon went to Sheffield, rather than the Agency’s head office in Marsham Street, or their Croydon office. The obvious conclusion has to be that Sheffield is quieter than the London or Croydon offices and would process the request quicker.

Whether Luzon making a personal appearance suggests there were problems with his application will remain a topic for conjecture.

Luzon’s immediate task is to have the team prepared for the game at Wolves on Saturday. Jose Riga admitted that the Charlton job was the hardest of his career, as he had no knowledge of the opposition teams.

Riga and his assistant, Karel Fraeye spent hours studying videos before, not only delivering a team talk, but also detailing on a one-to-one basis, what was expected of each individual player.

Back in the summer of 2008 Alan Pardew was asked a question about Charlton’s inept performance at QPR at the end of the previous season. Pardew explained to the assembled audience that professional footballers always try, but when it appears that they are disinterested, it is because they do not believe they can win when following the game plan.

Pardew added that it was his job as manager to convince the players that the plan would work.

Many fans who were at Watford last week would have welcomed some answers following a particularly abject display.

The build up to the game at Watford was difficult and this week has been no easier. Luzon has had his differences with key members of the current squad during his time at Standard Liege.

There are reports that the squad have reservations about Luzon’s abilities, a view shared by many fans.

Luzon likes to play a direct game but the Addicks do not have a genuine target man. Talk of Marc-Antoine Fortune arriving from Wigan appear to have cooled a little.

One player who could be arriving at The Valley in the near future is Tottenham’s 20-year-old midfielder, Grant Ward.

Ward is Lewisham born, left-footed and can also play in defence. Blackpool are also thought to be interested in him. The move would be a loan deal for the rest of the season.

Another player thought to be attracting interest from Charlton is Yeovil’s 24-year-old midfielder, Joe Edwards. Gloucester born Edwards skippers the Glovers and is also wanted by Birmingham and Bristol City.

Trying to predict Luzon’s team for Molineux is all but impossible, given the various issues involved, but let’s attempt to read Luzon’s mind.

The new head coach plays a more physical game than some of his predecessors, so physique may influence his decisions.

Neil Etheridge made some fine stops at Vicarage Road, but Luzon may prefer the more imposing figure of Marko Dmitrovic.

Chris Solly and Rhoys Wiggins are likely to continue in the full-back berths and though showing signs of being jaded, Tal Ben Haim and Andre Bikey may continue at the heart of the defence.

Johnnie Jackson’s leadership was sorely missed at Watford and, if fit, he will come back into the reckoning. New arrival, Milos Veljkovic, will also be pushing for a starting berth.

Tony Watt is another who will be hoping for a starting place. Luzon could put out this team:

Dmitrovic; Solly, Ben Haim, Bikey, Wiggins; Gudmundsson, Cousins, Buyens, Harriott; Watt, Vetokele.

Subs: Etheridge, Fox, Onyewu, Wilson, Veljkovic, Jackson, Church.

Andy D’Urso from Billericay will take charge of the game.

It will be as hard a first game as Luzon could get.

Wolves are unbeaten in their last eight league games, while Charlton have lost their last fourin all competitions, with the FA Cup goal against Blackburn being the only time they have found the net.

It would be a pleasant surprise if the 500 or so travelling Charlton fans witness some sort of a result. But whatever the result, they will demand a performance.
