Lindsey relishing Pep challenge
Lindsey relishing Pep challenge

From a SCEFL dugout to one in League Two opposite arguably the best coach in the world within the space of six months – a dream that is going to become reality in January for Kent’s Scott Lindsey.

The former Chatham Town boss who left Medway in the summer to move to League Two Swindon Town is preparing for one of the ties of the FA Cup third Round with Pep Guardiola and his Premier League Champions Manchester City heading for the County Ground in January.

Speaking exclusively to KSN, Scott admitted he can’t wait. “When you put it like that, it does seem crazy doesn’t it! But that is the reality – we’ve drawn a brilliant Cup-tie for the Football Club; it’s a fantastic draw for the supporters and the players – to play against arguably the best team in this country, if not the world will be a fantastic spectacle. I really enjoy the way that they play like many others do, I’m sure.”

“I know that it’s going to be very hard work – but we’ll be doing the same work on City as we do every week. Cheltenham made it very difficult for them in Round Three last year and even took the lead until City won the game with late goals. Nothing’s impossible in football and I can guarantee that we’ll be doing all we can behind the scenes to try and win the game – it’s not just a day out for us, we’re going to be trying to get through!”

“I’ll shake Pep’s hand on the day and invite him for a drink after the game – and that’s it, welcome to Swindon! It will be business as usual for us and how can we get a positive reaction from our players and a good performance…”

“The reaction that I had from my friends in Kent to the draw was amazing! The messages came in thick and fast – “good luck;” “all the best” and,” Scott added smiling, “the best ones were, “any spare tickets?” which I had a few times! I didn’t see the draw live myself and I was just as amazed as everyone else with the incredible draw!”

Scott’s move back into League football happened almost overnight back in the summer; “Things happen quickly in football, and you do get used to that believe it or not,” he conceded, “but it would be nice to stay at a club for a period of time to really achieve something special!”]

“It was the case when I was at Forest Green – it was home and I felt we were doing well playing a good style of football and that was only ended when my wife was diagnosed with Cancer, and I had to leave.”

Scott’s wife sadly passed away last year – Scott continued: “I’m really thankful and grateful that I’m back in League football at a club like Swindon. I’m really enjoying myself here!”

“There are new owners; I’m part of a new management team and a new squad as we arrived with two weeks left of pre-season with just six players. It’s been a credit to Ben Chorley, the director of football and Ben Garner, the manager, for the amount of work that we’ve all put in to assemble a squad, the work that’s gone on at the training ground creating a way of playing that is productive, not only in results, but very pleasing on the eye for the supporters.”

“I’m really pleased and am enjoying myself and I’m working with some fantastic people and the players have been outstanding too…”
