Lewisham Borough 2-0 Larkfield & New Hythe

In form Lewisham Borough continued their hot streak with a deserved win against Larkfield & New Hythe.

That completed a quick fire double for Lewisham that has seriously dented the Larks’ Southern Counties East Football League First Division championship hopes.

Although the visitors came out strongly, they only had a Frankie Sawyer free kick, that went well wide, to show for it and it was the hosts who went ahead. Jaheim Rose exchanged passes with Jaydan Robinson before cutting in from the right and rifling a shot into the top corner from a wide angle.

Khiani Shombe parried a Luke Leppard shot away and although Sawyer got their first, he was unable to pull it back and Shombe claimed his cross. Clark Woodcock hit a first time dipping volley but it was too straight and Shombe saved comfortably.

Although it wasn’t all one way, Lewisham struggled to create chances until they went further ahead just after the half hour mark. Robinson again combined with Rose down the right hand side and the latter crossed low to the far side to Sineen Sineen who shot home via the near post.

As half time approached Shombe saved a Matt Day header.

After the break Sineen shot wide of the near post before Boro came close to extending their lead. Erik Shehu sent Ade Adeyinka away and he slotted it beyond Aaron Lee-Wharton, but also the far post.

Shehu then tried to curl a shot with the outside of his boot but it was too straight and was saved.

Woodcock fired over as the Larks tried to up the tempo, then Jacob Gilbert had a shot tipped over by Shombe. Leppard had a header saved easily before Shombe made an excellent save by sticking out his left foot to keep out Day’s low shot.

Robinson sent a rasping drive just wide of the far post for the hosts before the ever dangerous Rose hit a first time shot just wide with Lee-Wharton struggling.

With five minutes remaining, the Larks were reduced to ten men. Woodcock chased a long ball but Shombe got there just ahead of him. The two collided which left Shombe hurt but there didn’t appear to be malice in the challenge.

However, the referee, after consulting his assistant, brandished a very harsh red card.

Despite playing just shy of ten minutes stoppage time, Larkfield could only manage one more meaningful effort, a shot by Darren Cooper that Shombe saved to maintain his clean sheet.
