Leeds United v Charlton Athletic preview

Charlton play their last game of the season against champions, Leeds, at Elland Road on Wednesday evening.

The Addicks need to take a point from the game to guarantee their Championship status‎, though events elsewhere may make that unnecessary.

Hull trail Lee Bowyer’s side by three points but have an inferior goal difference. The Tigers travel to Cardiff.

Barnsley and Luton are two points behind the south Londoners, with inferior goal differences. Barnsley travel to promotion chasing Brentford, while Luton host Blackburn.

Wigan will have fifteen points deducted after the final whistle – albeit the Latics will appeal the decision. Paul Cook’s team would be on level points with Charlton after the‎ adjustment, but they have a better goal difference.

Sheffield Wednesday also face a hefty points deduction for alleged financial misdemeanours which would land them in the relegation places.

So it is a complicated scenario, and clubs may not necessarily know their fate at the final whistle.

Bowyer will put all that to the back of his mind and concentrate on the task in hand. With no further games to play, the manager can put out the team he thinks is best suited to get a result.

Bowyer had some great times at Elland Road as a player‎, and is still popular there. It would be nice if he could enjoy a double celebration after the final whistle.

Geoff Eltringham from Tyne & Wear will be the man in the middle.

It will be a short summer this year, and Charlton need resolution to the ownership issue to enable Bowyer to construct a squad for next season.

A number of players will make their final appearances for the club tonight. Special mention must be made to Josh Cullen for his two year loan stint from West Ham. Cullen has been superb.

His contract is up at the London Stadium and the Hammers have a decision to make. If they release him, there will be plenty of interest from Championship clubs.
