Kent stars go under the knife

Captain Robert Key is one of Kent’s players that have undergone surgery to ensure they are ready for the new season.

Key went under the knife last week for a hernia operation, whilst batsman Daniel Bell-Drummond had surgery on an ankle problem on Monday.

The pair could also be joined by seamer Mark Davies in having surgery through the winter as they prepare for next season, however all three are expected to be fully fit in time for pre-season training.

Speaking exclusively to Kent Sports News, Kent’s Chief Executive, Jamie Clifford explained the reasoning behind getting their players through surgery now:

“I think Rob’s was a routine op and can be described as a sportsman’s groin injury. All the indications from our physio and medical staff is that it should be routine and there will be no lasting problems.”

“It’s just a period of recovery which will be fine and October is a good time to get it out of the way.”

“I think if there are things that need to be done from a medical perspective, the sensible thing is to try and attack them early in the off-season so there is plenty of time for recuperation.”

With the past season now almost a month behind us, all of Kent’s squad have been handed individual plans for the winter to ensure they come back for the new season with the best chance of succeeding in all forms of cricket.

Under the watchful eye of Jimmy Adams, physio Nimmo Reid and strength and conditioning coach Pete Kelly have tested the squad for their levels of fitness prior to the winter, with the playing staff to undergo similar tests upon their return in the spring.
