The popular skipper signed a year’s extension to his contract, keeping at the club until next summer.

There will be a huge turnover of players before the next campaign starts, with many of the contracted players moving on.

Here is what the skipper had to say:

“This is my club, I’ll be here next season and I’ll be giving it everything to try and get us back.

“I’ve been there before, and captained the side to a promotion from League One, and I know that won’t sound like much solace to the supporters at the moment. But we have to try and rebuild and recreate some of the spirit that we had that year.

“They were some of the best times in my career. I’m sure the fans enjoyed that year and we have to hope that we can rebuild in the right way and I’ll do all I can to help that process and approach next year like we did when we got out of League One.

“None of us want to be there. I want to get this club back to where it belongs, it certainly doesn’t belong in League One, and I’m just gutted that it has come to this.

“The supporters are the ones I’m really gutted for, the guys that came up tonight and have supported us all season – they don’t deserve this.

“We deserve this as players because we haven’t been good enough but we can’t question the support that we have received and the effort that they have put in.

“Now we’re going to have to try and give them something; it won’t undo the damage but we have to try and give them something in the last three games and try and give them some hope for next season,” said the skipper.

Reports in the Belgian press on Tuesday, claim that Igor Vetokele has a clause in his contract that allows him to leave The Valley on a free transfer if the club are relegated.

The Angolan international made an instant impact after signing for the Addicks in the summer of 2014, but has been plagued by injury for much of his time in SE7.

Vetokele has recently returned to the team but has looked well short of match sharpness.

It seems likely that he will activate his option to move on.
