It’s so good to be looking up!

I’m not sure I can write anything that nobody has already said, to be honest. What a time it is to be a Gillingham fan.

I had a really bad feeling going into Saturday. I know that’s pessimistic, but I just thought that it was too good to be true. 10 new signings, a team in good form and a packed house against a team struggling.

At half time I thought I was going to be right. We were poor in the first 45, and Crawley deserved to be ahead. We had Glenn Morris to thank for keeping us in the game. The gaps between the lines were huge and our midfield was parting way too easily. But we too could have scored – I’ve no idea how Dom Jefferies missed his chance.

I don’t know what Neil Harris said to the players at half time, but it worked. We were more on the front foot, quicker with the ball and much more intense off it. I don’t remember our visitors having a shot in the second period and we should have scored more than one.

But a win’s a win, and 10 points from the last 12 available is a fantastic return.

I can’t believe we’re still in the relegation zone. Image how far adrift we’d be if we didn’t have these new players. I’m convinced Rochdale and Hartlepool will be the two to go down, but ideally we’ll pull away from the bottom two sooner rather than later.

I thought Tom Nichols was absolutely phenomenal on Saturday. He did everything but score – and should have done in the second half with the chance that Corey Addai saved well. He’s the most intelligent player I’ve seen in a Gills shirt in a while and he personifies what it’s about to represent Gillingham Football Club. That’s important, as has been said by many before.

Neil Harris said after the game that his ‘injury’ was only cramp, which is good. We need him fit and fighting because he’s our best player for me now.

Oliver Hawkins was also magnificent again. It’s genuinely night and day comparing him to what we had to endure before January with Mikael Mandron. He holds it up well, he actually wins headers, and his link play is really good.

I saw someone say when Hawkins came in that Neil Harris lives and dies by his target man and I do agree. We’ve got a good one, and fingers crossed his injury isn’t serious either. He did play on for a while holding his side, so everything is crossed.

I’m starting to feel really sorry for George Lapslie, which is strange, I know. Not in the way that he’s not a good player or anything – much the opposite. He’s one of the best midfielders in this division and he’s dropped out of a promotion race with Mansfield to come and play for us. I know he can settle with his young family and is probably being paid better than he was before, but I don’t think he came to sit on the bench.
