Injury problems mount for Addicks
Injury problems mount for Addicks

Lee Bowyer has two more names – Erhun Oztumer and Chuks Aneke – to add to his already lengthy injury list.

Oztumer has ankle ligament damage – which normally means several weeks on the sidelines, and Aneke‎ pulled a muscle in training on Thursday.

Thursday was Aneke’s first back in full training after recovering from a previous injury. This is the fifth different muscle injury Aneke has suffered this season, and Thursday’s session was not a physical one.

‎A succession of soft tissue injuries can sometimes be attributed to a player’s fitness level.

Another possible cause is if a player is being rushed back too quickly.
‎Here are Bowyer’s thoughts:

“Erhun Oztumer is injured. He’s done some ligaments in his ankle so he’s in a boot at the moment from the challenge he took last week. so he’s struggling at the moment. So he’ll be out for at least a couple of weeks I’d say.

“Chuks Aneke broke down on Thursday. The first day that he trained with us, he was outside for a week working on his fitness. He passed all the tests there and then his first day training with us, which wasn’t even a physical day, he ended up pulling a different muscle.

“So Chuks has now had five different muscle injuries since the summer. not the same muscle, different muscles. It’s not good. We were hoping that he was going to be coming off the bench.”

Charlton have demanding week coming up‎. Following Saturday’s long trek to Middlesbrough, the Addicks have home games on Tuesday and Friday, against Huddersfield and Hull respectively.

Charlton’s recent poor run has included a number of defeats against teams – such as Luton and Boro – who are below them in the table. The reverses have allowed the teams to claw themselves within touching distance of the Addicks.

Bowyer will have Tom Lockyer back from suspension on Tuesday, and Lyle Taylor came through his 45‎ minutes at the Riverside unscathed,

But the boss will not have the bodies available‎ to rotate the squad as much as he would like for a midweek game.

Charlton’s defensive unit has been suspect recently, but they will need to be on their mettle on Tuesday.

A win would take the Terriers to within two points of their hosts. And they have a certain in-form Karlan Grant in their ranks.

Bowyer will have to find a way to deal with his seering pace.

‎Here are the boss’ thoughts about Tuesday’s game:

‎”We’ll regroup and dust ourselves down and we go again Tuesday and we’ll be better Tuesday. The lads will be fiery and up for it.

“To be fair that’s the first time I’ve not been happy with their work-rate, so that’s not bad going after 18 months! It’s just disappointing because i felt this was a place we could come and take the three points.”
