Hungerford Town vs Welling United Preview

Following their professional F.A. Cup performance, Welling United return to league action with a visit to Hungerford Town.

Their cup performance was just the boost that they needed after a difficult league run that had seen the Wings pick up just one point and score one goal in their last four National League South matches.

Against the Surrey based side from the BetVictor Isthmian South Central side, Welling scored seven times without a response, and could have scored more. They could have gone ahead in the first minute but Adam Coombes hit the post with his header. However he was not to be denied, and three minutes later he fired home.

Danny Waldren marked his second Welling United debut with a headed goal and Coombes scored again immediately after the break. Anthony Cook made it four one minute into the second half before Coombes’ strike partner, Bradley Goldberg nabbed a brace. Jack Jebb rounded it off with a trade mark free kick.

As some of Welling’s squad players needed some playing time, they played a friendly at Welling Town on Tuesday night. The first team squad players played the entire ninety minutes with the rest of the team made up of players who have been training with the club and some of the promising academy scholars.

For the record, the Wings won the game two-one. Luis Montoya put the Boots ahead but the Wings levelled when a defender sliced Luke Rooney’s goal into his own net. The winning goal was scored by Aaron Cosgrave’s brilliant lob.

Saturday’s hosts, Hungerford, have had a very up and down season and are the prime example of how nearly anyone can beat anyone in the National League South. Two weeks ago, the Crusaders claimed an excellent victory at Dulwich Hamlet to lift themselves off the foot of the table but then they got knocked out of the F.A. Cup by BetVictor Southern League leaders Poole Town.

When Welling visited the Crusaders last season, they claimed a hard fought victory with Danny Mills scoring the only goal just passed the hour market. They will be expecting another tough challenge on Saturday and hoping for a similar outcome.
