Hungerford Town v Welling United preview

For the fifth time in six games Welling United hit the road on Saturday with a visit to Hungerford Town.

That won’t bother Jamie Coyle’s team too much as they have a better away record than home. At Park View Road, they have won twenty-four points from seventeen games whilst on their travels they have picked up twenty-nine points from the same number of games. Only league leaders Havant and Waterlooville have a better away record.

They come into the game off the back of a good win at Bognor Regis Town on Tuesday evening. Adam Coombes got them off to a flier scoring in the fourth minute from Jamie Philpot’s pass. Then the roles were reversed when Philpot finished well after Coombes had sent him clear.

After the break they controlled the game and deserved a third that duly arrived when Jack Jebb’s cross appeared to be handled by a defender on its way to goalkeeper Dan Lincoln. It mattered little though as Lincoln was unable to hold on and Coombes stabbed home for his third goal in three games since returning from Sutton United.

Although Bognor snatched a late goal through substitute Ibra Sekajja, it was no more than a consolation and Welling left the Sussex coast with three well earned points.

Coyle’s one concern that came out of the game was that neither Magnus Okuonghae nor Joe Healy were able to finish the game however both substitutions looked to be precautionary and he will hope that both are able to start. Jack Parkinson was unable to play at Bognor with an abductor strain and Coyle selected himself as replacement.

There may be a newcomer to the squad as Jeffrey Monakana has left Welling to join Wealdstone so any injury would leave them short-handed.

Whilst Welling come into the game on the back of a victory, hosts Hungerford will be looking to bounce back following a 4-0 reversal at Gloucester City and a 3-1 loss at Hampton and Richmond Borough. That defeat leaves them in peril one place above the relegation zone.

Their home record is won five, drawn four and lost seven but they will be scrapping for every point and their last game at home ended in an impressive 3-1 victory over St. Albans City.

When the two teams met at Park View Road in August, Welling came out on top with a 3-2 victory. The game looked to have been finished with less than twenty minutes on the board. Coyle gave them a third minute lead and Bradley Goldberg made it two on the quarter hour mark

Four minutes later, Tom Bradbrook made it three before Hungerford pulled one back through Louie Soares with less than half an hour on the clock. Things then quietened down but Hungerford added a second through Luke Hopper.

That proved to be the last meaningful action in the game and Welling would be delighted to replicate the outcome to cement their place in the play-off zone.
