Holmes joins Gills on loan

Winger Ricky Holmes has this evening become Gillingham’s second loan signing of the day, as he joins the club on loan from Sheffield United until the end of the season.

The 31-year-old winger arrives having played on loan earlier in the season for Oxford United, the former Charlton player is currently injured and will be out for a period of time before he can take to the pitch at the Medway Priesfield.

There is no doubt that when he is fully fit he could be a massive asset to Steve Lovell’s side and their quest to move up the League One table.

Holmes signing follows hot on the heels of Graham Burke who also joined the club on loan this afternoon from Preston North End until the end of the season.

Speaking about coming to the club on loan, Holmes said: “I’m more grateful than anything else as I’ve been injured. Gillingham have given me the opportunity to get me fit, and within a month I should be back doing what I love doing. I can’t wait to be back out there.”

Despite Holmes being injured Lovell was clearly pleased to bring in a player of Holmes’ quality, he said: “It’s a great signing for the club; Ricky is an excellent professional and somebody who has an awful lot of quality. We look forward to working alongside him.”
