Hessenthaler to support new boss
Hessenthaler to support new boss

Former Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler says he will offer as much help and support as he can to his successor when the club’s new manager is announced.

Hessenthaler was sacked as Gillingham manager two weeks ago after failing to secure promotion to League One but has remained at the club after accepting a position on the board overseeing all football matters.

Chairman Paul Scally has expressed his delight at keeping him onboard while the man himself has also said how pleased he is to stay involved with the Gills.

“It’s overseeing all football matters from the board room regarding recruitment,” he told the club’s official website.

“I will be looking at player’s contracts and pretty much doing a lot of the stuff the chairman cannot do as he lives in Dubai. I will be scouting, doing match reports – whatever the manager needs I will be fully there to support him as well, so it will be an interesting role and I look forward to the challenge.

“I am very much hands on but that won’t stop me from popping down to (the training ground) get myself involved in a few sessions with the young boys to see who is coming through.”

Hessenthaler is currently assisting Scally in trying to appoint his successor with a potential manager in place by the end of the month.
