Herd linked with Gillingham move

Former Aston Villa defender Chris Herd is being linked with a move to Gillingham.

Chris Herd

Just two months after quitting Australian side Perth Glory without having kicked a ball, the 27 year old is set to have a medical with Gillingham today before penning a one-year deal.

Herd has been without a club since leaving Chesterfield at the end of last season and seemed set for his new career back down under.

He signed a two-year deal with his hometown team before making a sensational U-turn just a week before he was due to arrive in last August, due to family reasons.

Capped three times by the Scoceroos, Herd played 23 games for League One side Chesterfield last season, but it was at Aston Villa where he made his name, spending five years with the club.

Herd can play in a variety of positions, mostly defensively and could be just what’s been missing from Justin Edinburgh’s squad.

The Gills have also been linked with a move for out of contract striker Frank Nouble with the former Coventry City forward having been at Priestfield in recent weeks.
