Harris disappointed with missed chance
Harris disappointed with missed chance

Gillingham manager Neil Harris admits his side missed a great chance to reduce the deficit on those above them in the league on Tuesday night.

Held to a goalless draw by AFC Wimbledon at Priestfield, The Gills drop one place to 23rd in League One, still five points behind their opponents and from safety.

Chances were few and far between with The Gills guilty of wasting the few that did come their way, but Harris was keen to draw on the positives after the game:

“I’m not quite sure how it finished 0-0, it’s the best we have played with the Football since I have been here. I thought the real moments of quality came from us. Some of our build-up play was good.”

“What we showed tonight is that, when we get the quality right in the final third, we can be creative. Tonight we made enough chances to win two or three games.”

“We had a reaction, certainly from Saturday, which I asked of the players, and promised the fans. We just couldn’t get the ball in the net, and I think that’s been a big story of the season, not just in the last few games.”

“I thought some of the individual performances were outstanding. Collectively, as a team, it’s the most sustained pressure we have had and we could build attack after attack. Jacko’s (Ryan Jackson) energy was excellent. The scramble at the end probably sums it up.”

“It wasn’t to be. We were the better team by a mile. We will get better, we are not giving chances away but we’ve just got to find that killer instinct which is the hardest part of Football and the reason why we’ve scored so few goals this season.”

If the truth be told, Gillingham have looked shot shy for some time now and although Harris has stiffened the defence, going forwards they lack creativity and that killer instinct in front of goal.

That comes down to the quality of the squad and Harris must surely now have one eye on next season and how he plans to get the side promoted from League Two.
