Kent’s David Griffiths is hopeful that his form in the NatWest T20 Blast can see him stake his claim for a place in the team in other formats.

The 28-year-old right-arm seamer came to Canterbury from his home county Hampshire in the off-season, but has seen his first-team opportunities limited so far this season having suffered from a few minor injuries.

However, Griffiths has started the Spitfires’ two T20 Blast games so far this season – away to Somerset and at home to Gloucestershire – and has impressed with the ball as Kent have picked up victories in each.

He bowled with excellent pace in both games, and was lauded by his coaches for his performance at Somerset, despite not taking any wickets. He then picked up figures of 1-12 against Gloucestershire last Friday night, again providing an excellent death bowling option.

“Last week I know in myself that I bowled well”, Griffiths said following the 21-run win against Gloucestershire.

“I got all my yorkers perfectly right – I didn’t get the wickets but the team won. I back myself to bowl yorkers against anyone and everyone. It came out really well last week and came out well today.”

“Everything’s coming together now after my little niggle”, the paceman said.

“I’m getting a chance in this [NatWest T20 Blast], so hopefully that keeps going well and I keep bowling well at the death and wherever I have to bowl, and I’ll see what happens in the four-day cricket.”

“For any first team stuff, I want to be putting my name up for grabs, but at the minute, I’m not getting a look-in in the four-day stuff. I’ve put my name in the hat in the one-day format, so if I can keep bowling well in this, as long as I’m playing well in one format, I can hopefully work my way into the four-day side.”

Griffiths was pleased with the side’s performances in winning their first two T20 games of the season, with the team preparing to face his former county Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton tomorrow [Thursday] night in their next game, which will be shown live on Sky Sports 2.

“We’re two from two, so however you win, we’re winning, and that’s all that matters – we’re putting the points on the board.”

“I think there is [a point to prove against Hampshire] – mainly to myself”, the Isle of Wight-born seamer said about facing his former teammates.

“They’re doing well as well. I’m sure it’ll be played with a lot of banter and as long as we come out on top, that’s all that matters. It’ll be a good occasion for me and the team, so we’ll look forward to that now.”
