Lydia Greenway believes England Women’s narrow warm-up victory over Pakistan today will stand them in good stead when the World Twenty20 starts next week.Lydia Greenway13

Chasing at target of 107, Charlotte Edwards’ side scraped home with two wickets and one ball to spare in Savar.

“It was hard fought,” Greenway, who top-scored for England with 34, told ecb.co.uk. “It’s the first game we’ve had out here; we’ve obviously been training for a few days, but I think it’s really good that we’ve been in a game situation and have come out with a win.

“I think the more we’re in those situations the more we’re going to learn.

“A lot of us have been out there and faced those conditions and our bowlers have got overs under their belts, so it’s been a good day all round.

“Our training has been based on being in those scenarios – it tends to be 15 or 16 off two overs – and today Danni Hazell and Annie Shrubsole have gone out and done it, so I think when we’ve got batters coming in in the lower order and going out and putting into action what they’ve been practicing is really good for us.”

The conditions in Bangladesh are a long way from those England experienced during the recent Ashes victory in Australia, and Greenway believes facing a team used to the conditions on the sub-continent will prove advantageous as they continue to try and gain momentum ahead of their opening group match against West Indies on Monday.

The turning pitch also gave uncapped spinners Jodie Dibble and Rebecca Grundy a chance to stake their claim for a place in the side, with both impressing Greenway.

“I thought they both bowled really well,” she added. “I think it obviously gives us something different for this tournament and the fact they’ve bowled really well today is a huge positive for us.

“We’ve prepared for the sort of wickets that we’re going to be facing out here, so we’re prepared in terms of facing that and hopefully we can keep executing the plans that we’ve been speaking about and keep moving forwards.

“It was nice to be able to spend time out in the middle; as a batter that’s what you want to do in the warm-up games and that’s what a few of us did today, so hopefully we can keep doing that in our next warm-up game against the Kiwis.”
