Glebe progress in FA Youth Cup

In an entertaining hard fought FA Youth Cup tie, Glebe came out on top with two first half goals and a penalty in second half injury time against local rivals Cray Wanderers.

The game got off to face paced start with Glebe having the better of things, Alfie Moynes having a shot saved by Dylan White, before they took the lead on 12 minutes when a ball from the right caught the Cray defence flat footed and Finlay Boyce struck to dive his shot just inside the far post from ten yards out for 1-0.

The Foxes almost doubled their lead when Boyle crossed for Jack Keen who headed his chance just over the bar, but two minutes later Glebe did extend their lead when Henry Phillips hit an unstoppable volley from 30 yards out which just dropped in under the bar for 2-0.

Cray’s first chance came when Jed Nsiah-Asare crossed for Israel Kabengole, but his shot was saved by Izac Moses. Omarion Byfield and Moynes both forced saves from White in The Wands goal and Phillips fired narrowly over for Glebe, while at the other end Shaquon Williams and Bailey Dell were denied by the young Foxes custodian Moses.

The second half saw Glebe start well, but then The Wands rallied and came back into things. The Foxes had a penalty shout turned down when Keen had to go off injured, but from there Cray pressed. A Dell corner fell to Luke Miller who hit the underside of the bar with a powerful drive and Ben Morgan was denied by Moses from the rebound.

Ernest Kargbo had a free kick saved for The Wands before play became more broken up with injuries and stoppages. Cray pulled a goal back on 66minutes when a free kick from Dell caused chaos on the six yard box and Aarons Mula turned the ball home for 2-1.

Play was wide open from there Wands keeper White made a great save from Moynes while at the other end Kabengole just clipped a chance wide as he latched on to a ball from the left. Moynes had another shot saved by White, before the game was finally killed off in injury time when Nathan Jeche broke clear in the box and was pulled down by Miller who was shown a red card.

Boyce converted the penalty to make it 3-1 to Glebe right on the final whistle to seal their place in the next round.
