Glebe 3-2 Welling Town

Glebe and Welling Town served up a five goal thriller at Foxbury Avenue on Tuesday night, with the home side scoring three goals in the space of fifteen first half minutes and doing enough to see out the game from there.

After an open start played at blistering pace Glebe took the lead on 5 minutes when Charlie MacDoanld brought the ball down on the edge of the box, turned and fired home low into the corner of the net.

Richard Jimoh then had a long range effort saved for the visitors and they drew level from the resulting corner when Ashley Wright headed home from six yards out.

With the game wide open Jimoh went close again for The Boots before Glebe took the initiative on 11minutes when Welling keeper Jack Moore was caught in possession of the ball by MacDonald and he squared the ball to Frankie Sawyer who rolled the ball into an empty net for 2-1.

The Boots pressed to get back level with Jimoh and Luis Montoya going close, but the home side extended their lead on 20 minutes when Sawyer turned sharply on the edge of the area and smashed the ball home for 3-1.

With Glebe now doing most of the attacking MacDonald went close once and had another effort cleared off the line before Welling fought their way back into things and late in the half they nearly pulled one back when Montoya fired just over the bar.

Welling started the second half on top kicking down the slope, with Ryan Golding and Jimoh going close, but as things settled Glebe also created chances with Eric Demelo hitting the post and both Jerome Wade and Stacy Long having shots saved by Moore.

Then with twenty minutes to go Welling were handed a way back in when Emanuel Dasho brought down Ollie Bennett in the box for a penalty and Golding drove the spot kick powerfully past Billy Johnson for 3-2.

As the game went on it became more stretched, but the visitors finished stronger as they searched for an equaliser.

Despite Welling’s best efforts they were kept out by the home defence from there, even when a late long throw into the box saw all the players including The Boots keeper packed into the Glebe penalty area trying to get a vital touch, but to was no no avail.

This was a great game to watch and a fine advert for SCEFL football, served up by two good sides.
