Glebe 2-3 Tunbridge Wells

It took a freak goal to settle an entertaining Southern Counties East Football League Premier division match between Glebe and Tunbridge Wells.

Matt Day took seven minutes to put the Wells ahead but Ramell Lake levelled and Jamie Philpot converted a penalty to give the hosts a half time lead. Chris Lawal restored parity just shy of the hour mark before scoring the winner from a free kick from the half way line.

Michael Frazier had the first shot for Glebe after twisting and turning on the edge of the box but Aaron Lee-Wharton got down well to save by the post and it was the visitors who drew first blood. Mackenzie Foley made an excellent save from Jason Thompson only for it to come out to Day to finish.

There was almost an immediate response from Glebe but Lake’s teasing cross was just out of the reach of Frazier.

Lee-Wharton made a stunning save from Tom Hever before they levelled. Jordan Wells was cautioned for a wild tackle and his punishment was heightened when Lake’s free kick took a deflection to leave Lee-Wharton helpless.

Clever play by Anthony Dyche sent Philpot away and he was tripped as he entered the penalty area and converted from the spot to put the Foxes ahead.

Foley was rushed into a clearance that hit Day but it rebounded to safety before the referee showed great leniency to Wells. As Jake Britnal tried to take a quick free kick, the Wells’ midfielder kicked him to the ground but escaped without even a rebuke.

Jack Hope for the visitors and Glebe’s Frazier and Lake were all off target before Lee-Wharton made another brilliant save, this time thwarting Stacy Long after Philpot had played him in just before the interval.

After the break, Lake hit the near post with a corner before Lawal levelled. Collecting an over-hit corner he turned and struck a sweet powerful shot that Foley could only deflect onto the underside of the bar and in.

Yet another superb Lee-Wharton save had Britnal looking skywards before the visitors came close on the break when Jason Thompson played Euan Sahadow in but his drive flew back off the crossbar.

A minor melee followed a Glebe foul and Lawal was cautioned for his part in the aftermath but his dismay soon turned to joy when his free kick from in front of the home dugout caught in the wind and sailed over Foley’s head and into the net.

As hard as the Foxes tried to get back level, they couldn’t fashion another clear cut chance and the frustration got the better of Lake whose dissent earned him a visit to the sin bin with less than ten minutes late.

Victory for Tunbridge Wells keeps their interest in promotion alive while Glebe are probably looking at putting together a late run to take momentum into next season.
