Glebe 1-3 Whyteleafe
Glebe 1-3 Whyteleafe

There was no F.A. Cup giant killing at Foxbury Avenue as Isthmian League South East Division Whyteleafe claimed victory over Southern Counties East Football League club, Glebe.

Ryan Gondoh netted twice and claimed an assist as the club from Surrey were too strong on the night. However, Glebe played their part in a hard fought but entertaining encounter.

Connor Pring had the first goal attempt for Glebe but fired over before Frankie Sawyer was fouled just outside the side of the penalty area but his free kick curled straight into the arms of Tyler McCarthy.

Zahui Orome put in a cross to the near post and Andrew Sesay timed his run well but was unable to turn it inside the post before the Foxes had another opportunity when Sawyer was played in but was unable to get a clean strike away.

Eric Demelo made space for himself but couldn’t keep his shot down then, at the other end, Gondoh fired a free kick over.

Gondoh was given another chance soon after when fouled by Chris Parr and this time he took full advantage with a thirty-five yard free kick that beat Callum Thomas low to his right.

Five minutes later, another foul outside the area gave Gondoh a further chance. Although Thomas was able to keep out his effort, it fell into the path of David Owusu-Akyeaw to bundle home from close range.

Sawyer headed just wide from a good Pring dead ball delivery before another teasing Pring cross was cleared brilliantly by Courtney Clarke.

Yet another deep Pring delivery picked out Jason Mensah but he couldn’t find the target before Thomas saved well from Owusu-Akyeaw on the stroke of half time.

Three minutes after the break, the Foxes gave themselves hope when Jamie Philpot headed a corner goalwards and Charlie MacDonald stretched to stab home.

It all got a bit scrappy after that with a string of tough challenges resulting in a flurry of yellow cards including one for Danny McCarthy for a miss-timed challenge on the impressive Chibuike Ezannolim inside the penalty area. Gondoh stepped up and gave Thomas no chance from the spot.

Glebe tried to claw a way back into the game and a sweeping passing movement ended with Demela just failing to get on the end of it. Parr had a shot blocked before a spot of bagatelle in the Whyteleafe penalty area ended with the visitors grateful to hack it away.

Clarke curled over for Whyteleafe and Mensah headed wide for Glebe before the hosts’ misery was compounded when Parr was shown a second yellow card deep into stoppage time.
