Glebe 1-1 Welling Town

Defender turned emergency goalkeeper, Vinny Murphy, made a stunning injury time save to preserve a point for Welling Town at Glebe.

Three of the additional five minutes had been played when Kameron Edwards brought Lauris Chin down on the edge of the penalty, resulting in the Welling goalkeeper being dismissed. Charlie Penny hit the free kick low towards the far post, but Murphy dived full length to turn it away.

There was little to get excited about in the first half which was full of endeavour and desire but short on goalmouth action. Ainsley Everett fired wide from well out and Penny was thwarted by Edwards as he arrived late to meet a low cross from Ryan King-Elliott.

At the other end, Dennis Agbudume showed persistence to cross from the bye-line, but George Kamurasi got down to hold at the second attempt as Joao Carlos closed in.

As half time approached, Edwards made a double save from Kalvin Morath-Gibbs before a first time Everett shot flew just wide.

Six minutes after the half time break, the Boots went ahead. Dami Oni delivered a deep diagonal cross, and Carlos met it with a towering header that gave Kamurasi no chance.

Terlochan Singh tried his luck with a long range shot but Kamurasi held on comfortably.

Jamie Philpot was introduced off the bench for Glebe and within three minutes he had levelled. A good move sent Lanre Azeez away down the left and he showed good composure to pick out Glebe’s leading scorer who slotted home calmly from fifteen yards.

Azeez came close to putting the Foxes ahead with a header from Penny’s cross, but the game wasn’t able to flow as some fouls were punished and others weren’t, causing uncertainty amongst the players.

Having resisted booking anyone for seventy-five minutes, referee Kieran Cox brandished cards galore in the last fifteen. That included two yellow cards in quick succession for Jamie Bakhit leaving Glebe to play out the last few minutes with ten men.

Philpot headed just wide as the game moved into stoppage time before the late, late drama.

For Glebe, it was a disappointing evening, dropping two points in their hopes of catching the top two, but it was delight for Welling who backed up their home win against the Foxes with a hard earned draw.
