Gillingham make triple signing

Gillingham have confirmed the signings of striker Ben Strevens, midfielder Charlie Allen and goalkeeper Stuart Nelson.

Strevens and Allen have both signed one year deals at Priestfield, whilst Nelson has agreed a two year deal with The Gills.

32 year old striker Strevens has put pen to paper on the deal at Priestfield after impressing in the behind closed doors friendly with the Daggers at Beechings Cross on Wednesday.

Strevens was released by Wycombe Wanderers at the end of last season having spent the past two seasons with the Chairboys, scoring 12 goals in 84 appearances.

The striker had spent the previous season at Brentford, but it was his two seasons at Dagenham & Redbridge that stand out on his CV, having scored 40 goals in 123 appearances.

It was at Barnet that Strevens made his professional debut, spending six seasons at Underhill between January 1999 and August 2006 and will be familiar to Gills boss Martin Allen having played under him for the Bees between 2003 and 2004.

Strevens should make his debut for the club against Dartford at Princes Park on Saturday, with a number of trialists expected to play for The Gills.

It was also confirmed on Friday evening that The Gills had signed former Notts County midfielder Charlie Allen.

The 20 year old son of manager Martin, played nine games for County last season before being released and has agreed a one year deal at Priestfield with an option to extend for a further year.

Stuart Nelson also signed for the club on Friday evening, agreeing a two year deal after his release from Notts County.

He becomes the club’s second goalkeeper signing of the day after Tommy Forecast’s loan move was announced.

Nelson has played under Gills boss Martin Allen at both Brentford and Notts County and is expected to compete for the number one jersey at the club.

Altrincham striker Damian Reeves has also been linked with a move to The Gills after speaking with manager Martin Allen on Tuesday and is expected to be given a run out against Dartford on Saturday afternoon.

Strevens, Allen, Nelson and Reeves could then play a part in the friendly at Princes Park as Martin Allen looks at various options available to him now he has money in the bank from the sale of Paulo Gazzaniga to Southampton.

It will also give Allen the chance to have a look at the rest of his squad in a competitive game after the midweek 3-0 win over Dagenham & Redbridge at Beechings Cross.

Striker Adam Birchall is set to be given another chance to impress after missing the whole of last season, whilst Barry Fuller will once again pull on a Gills shirt as he looks to earn a new deal at Priestfield.

Dartford will go into the game looking to cause an upset themselves after promotion to the Blue Square Bet Premier league last season.

The Darts, managed by Tony Burman will be fielding some trialists themselves and could be a real test for Allen’s side.

All eyes will be on who is handed the skipper’s armbamd for The Gills with Allen confirming earlier in the week that he is as yet undecided who will captain the side for the forthcoming season.

Last season’s captain Andy Frampton remains favourite to keep the armband, but some suggestions have pointed towards another member of the squad taking the responsibility for the coming season.

Saturday’s game at Princes Park kicks off at 3pm and KSN will be there to give you up to date information on twitter and facebook with all the news and pictures to follow after the game.
