Gills lined up for first friendly

The Gills season may have only ended on Saturday, but already they have their first pre-season fixture lined up.

Former Gillingham striker Robert Taylor has invited them to play against his Diss Town side in Norfolk on Saturday 21st July, with kick off at 3pm.

Andy Hessenthaler is expected to take a full strength side to play Diss, with the new season beginning just a few weeks later.

Diss play in the Ridgeons Premier Division with Taylor taking over the manager’s job in April 2008 after a playing career that saw him play for the likes of The Gills, Manchester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Once again, The Gills are expected to player a number of friendlies around Kent from early July onwards, with the club likely to try and bring a few larger clubs to Priestfield for a game.

The one concern Hessenthaler will have is the amount of injuries that the side have picked up in pre-season friendlies in recent years.

Striker Adam Birchall picked up a knee ligament injury in the pre-season friendly at Welling United last summer, ruling him out for the entire 2011/12 season, with defender Simon King picking up an ankle injury at Bromley a few years ago.

Gillingham are set to announce the rest of their pre-season friendly schedule in the coming weeks.
