Gills freshen up their squad

Gillingham’s transfer window is up and running with a double deal this week.

Following the exit of on-loan forward Mikael Ndjoli on Wednesday, Steve Evans has brought in versatile Ipswich front man Jordan Roberts on loan for the rest of the season.

Perhaps the biggest coup, though, is the extension of midfielder Oliver Lee’s loan deal.

The Hearts man was due to stay until the 27th of January. He’s had a great season so far, and has attracted plenty of interest in the process.

The Gills have had to fend off other League One clubs for his signature, and fans will be delighted the deal is over the line.

“He made it clear that his preference was to stay at Gillingham” said Gills manager Steve Evans, speaking to the club website.

“I’m really pleased because he has had the opportunity to speak to other interested clubs, notably two in our league that are higher in the table than us.”

Lee has four goals and four assists for Gillingham so far this season, and has proved to be a crucial part in the team pushing up the table.

26 year old Roberts arrives on a short-term loan deal and is available for selection for this weekend’s game against Peterborough.

He made 12 Championship appearances last season and scored against Gillingham in the Leasing.com Trophy earlier this campaign.

Roberts may not be the first name on the team sheet every week but the move makes sense – especially with Mikael Ndjoli leaving.

He adds versatility as he can play up top, out wide, or behind the forwards. Although he hasn’t torn it up at Ipswich, he had a good spell at Crawley beforehand and always gives 100% on the pitch – an attribute Steve Evans craves.

Two good moves from the team behind the scenes at Gillingham to kick off January.
