Gills forced to call off more games

Gillingham have been forced to call off two more pre-season friendlies due to Covid within the squad.

Steve Evans’ side had to cancel tonight’s planned pre-season clash with Dartford at Princes Park after a number of players tested positive for Covid 19 on Sunday and Monday.

Despite the players that are Covid positive being forced to self isolate, Gillingham had hoped to still play their scheduled friendlies with Queens Park Rangers on Saturday and Peterborough United next Tuesday.

However, following a meeting today, they have made the decision to cancel both games and have issued the following statement:

“Following a management meeting earlier today it has been decided that our forthcoming pre-season matches scheduled with QPR on Friday (July 16) and Peterborough United next Tuesday (July 20) will be cancelled.”

“A number of first-team players tested positive for Covid-19 over Sunday and Monday, so those individuals are now self isolating.”

“The plan is for the Gills to be back in action on Saturday July 24 when we visit Colchester United.”

A Gillingham XI was also due to head to Hartsdown Park to face Margate on Wednesday night and that too has now also been called off.

The clash against local side Ebbsfleet United planned for this coming Saturday has also been called off with a Gillingham XI having been set to head to Stonebridge Road.
