Gills facing tough 48 hours
Gills facing tough 48 hours

It could be make or break for Gillingham’s season this weekend as they face two games in little over forty eight hours.

Andy Hessenthaler’s side have a trip to Burton Albion planned for Saturday afternoon before welcoming Southend United to Priestfield for the televised Monday night game.

One spanner in the works for both games could be the weather. Last weekend’s game with Hereford United was called off as the Priestfield pitch was frozen, especially on the Gordon Road stand side of the ground.

With forecasters predicting plunging temperatures lasting throughout the week, The Gills could once again be thwarted by sub-zero conditions.

Chairman Paul Scally will be keen to get Monday’s game played as a lot could be lost financially should the club be forced to postpone Gillingham’s only Sky game of the season.

As for Hessenthaler, he will be just as keen to get some football played as he looks to put his sides recent run of poor form behind them and pick up some much needed points in their quest for a place back amongst the play-offs.

Should Gillingham get some football this weekend, they could well see midfielder Danny Spiller back among the sixteen man squad after overcoming an ankle injury that has kept him out of the side since September.

Five defeats in their last six games has seen Gillingham drop to tenth in League Two with fifteen goals shipped in the process. That should see a shake up amongst Hessenthaler’s side with Paulo Gazzaniga expected to make his first league start for the club.

Both Connor Essam and Simon King should be in contention for a place in the first eleven after being patient for their chance, however a lot will depend on how training goes this week and who is available for selection.

Meanwhile, the earliest available date for the postponed Hereford game looks to be Tuesday 28th February or Tuesday 13th March. Should there be more postponements this weekend, a fixture pile up could be on the cards.
