Gillingham have this evening confirmed the signing of midfielder Nick Freeman ahead of the 2026/27 League Two season.

Freeman who has been on trial with the Gills this summer, is a versatile player who can play in a number of positions. An attribute that manager Gareth Ainsworth is a fan of.

The former Wycombe, Stevenage and Shrewsbury midfielder, who can also operate in defence or at wing-back, has played for Ainsworth before.

Nick began his career in non-league with Histon, Hemel Hempstead Town and Biggleswade before joining Wycombe in the summer of 2016. He went on to play 177 times for the Chairboys, scoring nine times in a seven year stay which also saw him earn promotion with the team to the Championship in 2020. 

He signed for Stevenage in 2023, playing 86 times and scoring three goals before joining Shrewsbury in January 2026.

Freeman, 30, played at Dover Athletic earlier in pre-season before featuring against both Charlton and Millwall. He could make his competitive debut for Gills next Saturday at home to Luton in the Carabao Cup. 

Speaking to the club website he said: “I am delighted to be here and get going. It’s a great group of lads and staff.

“I have played for the Gaffer before and he always creates a really positive environment for the lads. It was a no brainer to be honest.”
