Gillingham vs Shrewsbury preview

Gillingham will face off against Shrewsbury Town on Wednesday evening knowing only win will do if they want to stay in the hunt for a play-off position.

The Gills go into the game 14th in the League One table and eight points off sixth place Portsmouth.

Their aim for the season is to reach the play-offs, but too many draws and a lack of wins, especially away from home, has hampered their progress.

The Gills are unbeaten in nine League One games, but have drawn six of those.

The home form is good – the team have picked up seven wins out of 14 at Priestfield this season with just four losses. That is sure to help them tonight when Shrewsbury visit.

The Shrews will go into the game full of confidence themselves after Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Premier League leaders Liverpool in the FA Cup.

Jason Cummings netted twice to help his team come from 2-0 down to earn a replay – the players will be full of confidence, but maybe tired.

In terms of the league, Shrewsbury have no win in five games and have drawn their last two. Sam Ricketts’ men sit 16th in the table and two points behind Gillingham, which makes the game all the more important.

There are no fresh injury concerns for Gillingham. Mark Byrne remains sidelined for the season and Tom O’Connor won’t be fit for the game, but new signing John Akinde could make his home debut.

The match promises to be a tense one due to the importance of it. Gills manager Steve Evans branded Shrewsbury ‘an excellent team’ at the weekend, and Gillingham will have to show up on the night to get a well-needed win.
