Gillingham vs Blackpool – Preview

Gillingham will be looking for their second league victory in a row on Saturday when they host Blackpool in League One action.

The Gills picked up their first win of the campaign at Wigan last Saturday, and will be hoping to back up that victory with a positive result at Priestfield Stadium.

Dominic Samuel is set to make his second debut for the club after joining on a free transfer earlier on in the week. The forward missed registration by 30 minutes to appear in the Carabao Cup defeat to Stoke City on Wednesday, but he is expected to feature here.

If Gills boss Steve Evans is to continue with a one-striker formation, Samuel will battle Vadaine Oliver – who managed two assists against Wigan – for a starting place.

The Gills will also welcome back Josh Eccles after the midfielder missed the loss at Stoke through being cup tied.

They will, however, be without captain Kyle Dempsey, who is still a month or so away from fitness, and Stuart O’Keefe, who is out for the season with a broken leg. Time will tell if goalkeeper Jack Bonham, who missed the trip to Stoke with a back injury, will be fit in time. If he isn’t, teenager Joe Walsh will again deputise.

Elsewhere, Matty Willock was substituted early at Stoke with a tight hamstring, so he could miss the game. Evans could only name five substitutes in the week, and the bench could be light again here.

Blackpool themselves have one win and one defeat from their opening two league games. After falling to a 1-0 loss against Plymouth on the opening day, the Seasiders won 2-0 at home to Swindon last weekend thanks to a CJ Hamilton double.

Blackpool have been predicted to achieve some success this season under the guidance of Neil Critchley, so the runout won’t be an easy one for the Gills. It’s likely they will need to be at their best to achieve a result.

Supporters of course cannot watch the game inside Priestfield, but an iFollow pass can be purchased for £10.

Kick off is scheduled for 3:00pm BST.
