Gillingham v Swindon Town preview

On the eve of Valentine’s Day, there will be no love lost at Priestfield this evening as Gillingham host rivals Swindon Town.

Stephen Clemence will get his first taste of the rivalry between the two clubs that dates all the way back to the 1970s, long before many Gillingham fans were even born.

On the pitch, it will be a case of following up Friday night’s superb 3-1 win at play-off chasing rivals Notts County and despite results kind of going against The Gills on the weekend, they go into the game sitting 9th in League Two, just outside the top seven.

A win this evening and there is every chance Clemence’s side will have their destiny back in their own hands, but Swindon will be no pushover with the game expected to be a tense affair.

Being half term, both sides are expected to be well supported and a decent crowd is set to pour into Priestfield for the clash.

Both Jonny Williams and Remeao Hutton are expected to face their former side with Clemence likely to keep faith with the starting line up that took to the pitch on Friday night.

That will mean Max Clark retains his place at left wing back ahead of Scott Malone, Tim Dieng and Ethan Coleman will form the midfield three alongside Williams, whilst Oli Hawkins and Josh Walker are set to start up front.

Scoring three goals on Friday night will mean The Gills go into the game full of confidence and hoping to put on a display that both secures three points and entertains at the same time.

Speaking ahead of the Notts County game, Clemence admitted he knew very little of the rivalry with Swindon, but staff and fans had made sure he knew how important this game was.

“I believe it means a lot to the supporters,” he admitted.

“I had to be honest before coming to Priestfield, I didn’t know a lot about the rivalry, but I’ve been told by my staff and people who work at the Club, so I’m expecting there to be a very good atmosphere on Tuesday night to get right behind the boys and let’s take them on as well.”
