The Gills are back in League Two action this Saturday as they welcome Northampton Town to the MEMS Priestfield Stadium.
Gillingham earned a hard-fought point on the road at Fleetwood Town in last Saturday’s 0-0 draw.
The Gills created chances, but Ronan Hale and Will Goodwin were both denied by the woodwork, while Gareth Ainsworth also praised their defending which was improved from the 0-3 loss at home to Walsall.
However, the match also included an addition to the ever-growing injury list as Kadeem Harris was stretchered off in the 70th minute with a ruptured ACL.
Their opponents, Northampton Town, finished bottom of League One in the 2025-26 season, with nine league wins. This season, they secured a point in a 0-0 draw at home to Swindon but lost 1-0 away at Crewe last Saturday.
In last Saturday’s loss, the Cobblers were dominant in the first half but failed to convert any of their chances. Against the run of play, Crewe striker Josh March pounced on an error from goalkeeper Zach Jeacock to score the game’s only goal.
Gillingham and Northampton have played each other on 117 occasions, with the Gills winning 55 and Northampton 42. They last faced each other in April 2023 at Northampton, which ended 2-1 to the cobblers, with William Hondermarck scoring the winner in the 82nd minute after Aiden O’Brien had equalised for the Gills earlier in the second half.
The injuries continue to be the primary concern for Ainsworth with major summer signings Liam Gordon and Kadeem Harris now sidelined with potentially lengthy injuries. The Gills have signed Gambian Under 20 international Lamin Silah on a season-long loan from Nottingham Forest to bolster the attacking options and he could feature this Saturday.
Given the early setbacks, the Gills could certainly use a morale-boosting home win against their former League One opponents.
