Gillingham v Newport County preview

The Gills are back in League Two action this Saturday as they welcome Newport County to the MEMS Priestfield Stadium.

Gillingham’s last game was a 0-2 away loss to Swindon Town on New Year’s Day. That loss leaves the Gills 16th in the table, eight points away from the playoff places and extends their recent record to nine games without a win, and only one win from the last 15.

The performance against Swindon typified recent outings from Gillingham as they dominated the majority of the game with more shots and attempts on target but somehow failed to score.

Swindon were clinical, converting a free kick in the first half and a header to seal the result in the dying minutes, while goalkeeper Connor Ripley made some excellent saves to keep the clean sheet.

Gillingham will no doubt be glad of the extended break to regroup and ensure the squad is fully fit as they welcome Newport, who are currently bottom of the table.

Newport’s form has been poor this season with 15 losses from their 24 games. However, since they replaced manager David Hughes with Christian Fuchs, their performances have improved with three draws and a win from their last seven games. They are currently two points from safety, so they have every chance of survival.

In their last fixture away at League leaders Bromley, Newport dominated possession and created chances in a combative 2-1 loss. This is not a team for Gills manager Gareth Ainsworth to take lightly.

Gillingham and Newport County have played each other 88 times in total, with the Gills winning 29 and Newport 42. They last faced each other in the first round of the FA Cup on 1st November at Priestfield, which ended in 2-2 draw, with Newport winning 4-3 on penalties. Gillingham won the league fixture at Rodney Parade 3-1 on 20th September.

The respective league positions suggest Gillingham should be favourites. However, the respective recent form of both clubs suggests it might be an even contest. Both clubs have had 16 days to rest their players and are desperate for points: Gillingham to challenge for the playoffs again, and Newport for league survival.

Expect an exciting contest this Saturday.
