Gillingham v Blackburn Rovers preview

Gillingham will look to cause a shock and pick up a win against league leaders Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday night.

Steve Lovell should be able to call on Bradley Garmston and Connor Ogilvie for The Gills with the pair having been struggling with illness but are fine to be involved against Rovers.

Rhys Murphy and Liam Nash are both doubts, however midfielder Billy Bingham (broken ankle) and defender Aaron Morris (knee) are also still missing.

Boss Steve Lovell has a decision to make up front with Tom Eaves and Conor Wilkinson vying for a starting place, whilst Gills fans will be hoping there will be a return for Josh Parker after he’s missed the last few games with a thigh injury.

Defender Luke O’Neill is expected to miss the game with a groin injury and had to sit out the 0-0 draw with Doncaster Rovers.

For manager Steve Lovell, he wants just a few more points from their remaining games to ensure their League One status for another season:

“It was a tough game on Saturday and I am just hoping we can have a full squad to pick from against Blackburn and until the end of the season.”

“You are never safe until you’re mathematically safe and we have got six more games to build on this [50 points] and it starts on Tuesday against Blackburn.”

Blackburn will be without Ryan Nyambe as they aim to maintain their lead at the top of the table. The right-back has a hamstring injury picked up against Blackpool and will be out for a few weeks, though boss Tony Mowbray has plenty of options at his disposal.

The game should see the return of Bradley Dack to Priestfield as Rovers go in search of three points towards their promotion push, although the attacking midfielder has been struggling with a hamstring problem.

Long-term absentee Harry Chapman (hamstring) is now back training and was due to feature for the Under-23s on Monday but their game was postponed and that could mean he misses out this weekend. There are no other fresh concerns for Mowbray, whose side have won five of the last six games.

Gillingham and Blackburn haven’t met at the Priestfield Stadium since August 2009 in the League Cup – Blackburn won 3-1.

Rovers have never lost away at Gillingham in any competition – in five matches there, they’ve won three and drawn two.

Since the start of 2018, Blackburn have the three top goalscorers in League One (Danny Graham 7, Adam Armstrong 7 and Bradley Dack 6).

Tony Mowbray has managed three away matches at the Priestfield and only won once, a League Cup tie as Middlesbrough manager in August 2012 – he is winless in two league visits there (D1 L1).
