Gillingham v AFC Wimbledon preview

If ever there is a game that needs to be won, it’s on Tuesday night as Gillingham host AFC Wimbledon at Priestfield.

Neil Harris’ side go into the game on the back of Saturday disappointing 2-0 loss at home to Plymouth Argyle and sit 22nd in League One, some five points off safety and behind Tuesday night’s opponents.

Therefore, it could be described as a six pointer with both teams desperate for the points as they look to pull clear of the relegation zone.

For Harris, the manner of Saturday’s defeat was a disappointment and he seems set to ring the changes to a Gillingham side that lacked a real cutting edge and failed to seriously threaten the Plymouth goal.

Since arriving at Gillingham, Harris has made the side look more solid at the back, but that seems to have come at the expense of providing an attacking threat.

The Gillingham manager could then be tempted to change who takes to the field with Charlie Kelman and Ben Reeves pushing for a place in the starting eleven.

Both Olly Lee and Tom Dickson-Peters failed to impress at the weekend and could find themselves dropping to the bench against an AFC Wimbledon side that got thumped 4-0 at Bolton Wanderers at the weekend.

With just thirteen league games left this season, Gillingham are fast running out of opportunities to get the necessary points to stop them slipping into League Two.

Having secured only 26 points in their 33 games this season, Gillingham have failed to set the world alight and the campaign could go two ways from here on in.

Harris is determined to get the best out of a Gillingham squad that have failed to live up to expectations and this week could prove to be pivotal.
