Gillingham v Accrington Stanley preview

Steve Lovell will look to pick his troops back up as Gillingham entertain Accrington Stanley in League One action this evening.

Saturday’s 4-1 loss to Swansea City in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup will have been a bitter pill to swallow for the Gills players, but they have every opportunity to bounce back straight away.

Four points separate the two sides in the league with the visitors coming to Priestfield sitting 15th, whilst Lovell’s side desperately need a win to avoid dropping into the bottom four, starting the game 19th and just a point above the drop zone.

A win tonight will take some of the pressure off as Lovell looks at his squad one last time ahead of the January transfer window closing on Thursday evening.

Lovell has made no secret of his desire to add to his squad for the remainder of the season and the loan market may be the way to go for the Gillingham boss.

Strength in depth will undoubtedly give Lovell more options for the league run in and injuries in recent weeks have shown where the gaps in the squad are.

Talk of striker Tom Eaves leaving for Rangers appears to have cooled in recent weeks with the former Yeovil Town man having played a full part in Saturday’s defeat at Swansea.

Lovell must decide whether to keep with the personnel and shape that contained Swansea for large parts of Saturday’s game, but may be tempted to be more offensive against an Accrington side that have lost three of their last four games.

John Coleman’s side come into the game having lost 1-0 at home to Derby County in the FA Cup and will too be licking their wounds.

Anyway, Accrington Stanley…. Who are they?
