Gillingham 1-1 Millwall
Gillingham 1-1 Millwall

Gillingham held on for a vital point in their fight against relegation and this was a better performance at home against a team vying for promotion via the play-offs.

The game started with Millwall missing a glorious chance to score in the first minute when Steve Morison crossed from the right into the six yard area where Aiden O’Brien was but he missed his kick and the chance went, a couple of minutes later and Millwall had another chance when Morison headed wide.

In the sixth minute Josh Wright was bought down in the area but referee Charles Breakspear waved play on but most observers said no penalty. In the 10th minute Morison in space 12 yards out saw his tame shot saved easily by Tomas Holy.

Gillingham were now getting into the game and in the 13th minute a Lee Martin corner found Max Ehmer but his header went past the post. The game was end to end but the quality of the final ball left a lot to be desired and then in the 24th minute a Millwall corner to the edge of the area saw Shaun Williams volley go just over the bar.

Millwall were now creating the better chances and in the 28th minute Joe Martin cross into the area was knocked down for Morison but from 8 yards his shot was saved by Holy, another chance came Morison’s way in the 33rd minute when he received the ball in the area but his shot was again saved by Holy.

The half time whistle went and the view was that Millwall looked the team likely to score whilst Gillingham had played so much better than their last home game.

The second half started with Millwall on the front foot as in the 61st minute a cross into the area was half cleared to Morison on the back post but he headed on to the top of the net, then three minutes later Ben Thompson went on a mazy run twisting and turning, from 15 yards his shot went inches past the post.

In the 58th minute Gills had their half chance of the half when Loanee Harry Cornick 20 yards out saw his volleyed shot go just over the bar. In the 65th minute Gillingham nearly took the lead when Ryan Jackson on the right crossed into the 6 yards box where Captain Max Ehmer was and his acrobatic volley went just past the post.

Two minutes later the stadium erupted when Gillingham did take the lead when a Lee Martin corner was headed goal wards by Ehmer, superbly saved by Tom King but unfortunately for him straight to Joe Quigley who blasted it in from 6 yards, unfortunately the lead only lasted 5 minutes when the best move of the match saw Millwall equalise.

The move started on the right and eight first time passes later Jed Wallace 10 yards out saw his shot pushed away by Holy but only to Morison who from 8 yards shot home. The last 18 minutes plus added on time saw Gills hanging on with resolute defending as Millwall dominated possession but they could not get the winner.
