Gbode leaves Gillingham for Luton

Gillingham have confirmed that striker Joe Gbode has signed for Luton Town for an undisclosed fee.

The 20-year-old forward leaves MEMS Priestfield Stadium having joined Gills academy as an U15, making his pro debut in an FA Cup tie away at Cheltenham Town in November 2021.

In total he made 58 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring four goals.

He had previously enjoyed loan spells with Aveley, Margate, Folkestone Invicta, Hastings United and Maidstone United.

His last goal for the club came at Tranmere Rovers in August when he struck in stoppage time to earn Gareth Ainsworth’s men a point at Prenton Park in a 1-1 draw.

He could make his Luton Town debut on Saturday September 13th when the Hatters welcome Plymouth Argyle to Kenilworth Road in Sky Bet League One.

On their newest recruit, Luton Town manager Matt Bloomfield said: “Joe’s a young man who we have kept tabs on since the end of last season and who we played against this pre-season.”

“I know the managerial team at Gillingham very well and they have had nothing but good things to say about Joe’s talent and how high is ceiling is.”

“He’s one for the future but we’re looking forward to having him in and around the group.”

Joe said: “I’m delighted to be here, it’s a great move for me and I can’t wait to get started.”

“The facilities are unbelievable and it’s a well-run club with a good manager, and there are a lot of top strikers I can learn from.”

“I’m quite quick, I like to dribble – and score, of course. My stats might not say that but I think I can thrive in this environment.”

“Kenilworth Road is an unbelievable place; the stands are close to the pitch and that gives you that extra boost playing at home.”

“It’s a big family here and I’m delighted to be here.”

Gbode’s departure from MEMS Priestfield completes a busy day for The Gills with Travis Akomeah, Jonny Smith and Garath McCleary coming in and Jack Nolan having left the club by mutual consent.
