Fraeye to stay with Addicks
Fraeye to stay with Addicks

All the indications were that defeat by Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, would have spelled the end of Karel Fraeye’s time as interim head coach.

Karel Fraeye

It seems his replacement would have been a British coach with experience of the Championship. How quickly things can change in football.

Saturday’s result, coupled with a terrific performance, has probably ensured Fraeye’s safety for the time being.

The team came out of the blocks fast and Wednesday had no answer. Gone was the languid looking outfit who failed to impress at Boro and Milton Keynes, replaced by an energetic, hungry and confident side.

The team were given a motivational speech by a soldier in the dressing room ahead of the game. Allied to the diamond midfield, and with strikers Simon Makienok and Reza Ghoochannejhad playing slightly wider than normal, everything came together to produce a marvellous performance.

The strikers’ positions created space for Johann Berg Gudmundsson to exploit.

Though Fraeye would not be the choice of most fans, he is highly regarded by the players, and former Addick, Andy Hughes, is a particular fan. Fraeye has a UEFA ‘A’ badge and has a sound knowledge of tactics.

In his programme notes, Johnnie Jackson alluded to Fraeye’s popularity amongst the players. Jason Euell was animated on the touchline, and the afore mentioned Hughes, would be a great addition to the coaching staff if he could be persuaded to return South.

A team is only as good as its last result, and Charlton now have a two week break, before facing Birmingham at St Andrews on 21 November.

Fraeye should have more options to choose from by the time the Tractor Boys arrive. Tony Watt should recover in time to be involved, one or two of the long term injuries may be close and Igor Vetokele is back in the country, though the game will probably come too soon for the Angolan international.

Lloyd Doyley, who has been training with the club for the last few weeks, has signed on a non-contract basis, and was included in the extended squad for the Wednesday game. Ironocally, had he made the final 18, Doyley would probably have come on to replace the injured Chris Solly.

Doyley may be involved against his former club Watford, in Tuesday’s Premier League Under-21 cup tie at St Albans.

Do not be surprised if there is another arrival or two before the Ipswich game either.

West Ham reports last week suggested the Addicks would travel to the East End on Wednesday, for a behind-closed-doors friendly. This match will now not take place.

It may be nearly two weeks before the Addicks are in action again, but life around the club will be anything but dull.
