Feeney – Welling weren’t good enough
Feeney – Welling weren’t good enough

It was another disappointing Saturday afternoon for Welling United as they crashed at home to Dulwich Hamlet. After the game, Welling manager Warren Feeney shared his views.

“I don’t think that we were good enough today.” he said. “We got ourselves into the game but I wasn’t happy when we went one-nil up. I still felt there should be a bit more urgency.”

Having gone ahead, they conceded when they had ample time to clear but ended up giving away a free kick in a dangerous position. Feeney said “It was disappointing that we gave away the free kick but it shouldn’t have got to there. You can’t coach someone who can’t head a ball. You give them initiative and to concede right on half time I said to them ‘you’ve got to respond right’ and we didn’t and we got what we deserved.

“We come out and again it’s something that you can’t coach. Mistakes. Then we get ourselves back into the game and there was a panic that they’ve got to get out of and I’m very disappointed with the performance.”

After the heavy rain, a lot of work was undertaken to get the game on. Combined with it being a local derby, it had all the ingredients for a hard game, and so it proved to be. Feeney said “It was a defenders nightmare and a strikers dream. It’s a great football day today, an old school football day. A game where you’ve just got to win the battle and you’ll win the game. We worked on a few bits and pieces ln midweek and I don’t know of it’s too much information.

“I thought that it was one of those games today, whoever ran the hardest, with a wee bit of desire would get the result. The goals that we gave away were poor. I’d have taken the point with the way we played today but we lost the game.”

Dylan Gavin has signed on loan from Charlton Athletic after Daniel Nkrumah was recalled by Leyton Orient, and he cannot be faulted for his running. Feeney continued “ I’m very pleased (with the signing). We lost Dan yesterday to Leyton Orient. It was a hard one but the kid’s obviously done something right because he’s gone back there.

“It’s good to get Dylan in because he’s one that we looked at. He’s got energy. He’s got pace but we just didn’t give him any service, but I think he’ll be a good signing for us.”

Myles Roberts was also absent. Feeney explained “Myles hurt his finger in training the other day so he’s one we’ve got to assess, keep an eye on, and see how he is. It doesn’t rain, it pours at the minute.”

Now, for Welling it’s on to Chippenham, and Feeney will again be looking for a response. He said: “We’re probably a bit better away from home. I don’t know if the boys get a bit nervous, there’s something, but they’ve got to take it on the chin, move on and hopefully, go and get a result.”
