In dreadful weather conditions, Welling United’s recent improved run was ended with defeat at Worthing. Immediately after the match Welling manager Warren Feeney gave his comments.

“I thought we actually started the game quite well.” he said “When you come to a team like this it’s going to be an open game. Both teams had chances. They scored at the right times.

“We gave ourselves a mountain to climb but I can’t fault the players efforts and I said that to them in there. We had enough chances. I think the killer one was just before half time when Medy went through. If Medy (Elito) scores that it’s a different game. I can’t stand here and knock the players for their attitude. I asked for it and they’ve been outstanding for me and we’ve got to move on.”

Taylor Curran was dismissed in stoppage time for pushing Josh Chambers away as the Worthing man stood over it to delay a free kick from being taken quickly. |It seemed incredibly harsh and Feeney was not impressed.

“I’ve been sent off for stopping the play and you can see we were chasing the game.” he complained. “It’s a free kick, It’s not a punch. He pushed the boy to take the ball to hit it and the referee sent him off. It’s the worst red card I’ve ever seen in football.”

Although disappointed, Feeney wasn’t two downhearted. “At the end of the day we’ve lost a game and we’ll have to assess it but we’ll take a look at it and take the positives out of it and bounce back.”

He continued. “You want entertainment. You want to win but we’re not going to knock them (the players).

“We’ve had two great wins and we knew this was going to be a difficult game but if we play like that we’ll win more games than we’ll lose. A few were off a little bit of form, but I’m not too bothered. I can take getting beaten if we play like that.”

Loanee Daniel Nkrumah scored his first goal for the Wings, and Feeney is delighted with what he has brought to the squad, He said “Daniel did to them what they did to us, coming off the blind side. It’s a great ball by Medy but I think that at times we had to have a wee bit more belief in ourselves.

“Daniel’s loan has been extended to the end of the season which is a big thing and I want to thank Leyton Orient because, as you can see, he’s got a lot of ability. Obviously, there’s bits and pieces he needs to work on but he’s enjoying his football and that’s a big thing for us.”

Feeney also had praise for the Welling followers who, despite the train strike, travelled in numbers.

“You can see the way the supporters clapped the players and that’s all that I can ask for. I can take getting beaten, I’m sure they can as well. I’m a fan myself. They showed passion and it’s good to see them down here. As I’ve said before, we want a community and we’ll win more games than we’ll lose if we keep playing like that.”
