Faversham Town 3-1 Tonbridge Angels

Faversham Town of the Bostik South Division caused an FA Cup shock with victory over Bostik Premier side Tonbridge Angels, pocketing them a £3,00 windfall and a place in the next round.

Tonbridge will be disappointed as they dominated possession for most of match but were not clinical enough.

The match started with Faversham taking the lead in the 6th minute when a Danny Walder corner to the back post found Mark Lovell unopposed and his header from 6 yards hit the back of the net.

Tonbridge were shocked by this but they started to get a lot of possession and create some half chances, in the 20th minute Andre McCollin received the ball on the edge of the area and his shot went just past the post, two minutes later he McCollin got closer when from the edge of the area his shot came back of the post and was cleared.

In the 30th minute against the run of play Faversham increased their lead when Dan Carrington’s long diagonal ball from left to right found Lovell who took it in his stride, went into the area and shot past Jonathan Henly.  In the 36th minute Tonbridge got back into the game when Tom Beere running forward from halfway passed forward into the path of McCollin who from 15 yards shot past Simon Overland.

Tonbridge were now chasing an equaliser and in the 39th minute they nearly got it when a free kick 20 yards out taken by Joe Turner was pushed around the post by Overland and in the 3rd minute off added on time Beere got to the by-line and then chipped into the 6 yard box for Nathan Elder but his header went over the bar.

The half time whistle went and Ray Turner would be delighted with the scoreline but would want a little more composure by his team while Steve McKimm would want his team to be more clinical.

The second half saw Tonbridge still having a lot of possession and making some half chances, in the 51st minute Chris Kinnear 30 yards out tried his luck and forced Overland to push it away for a corner.

Three minutes later on a counter attack Turner on the edge of the area saw his shot go just past the post, two minutes later Turner on the left wing cut inside and his shot from 20 yards was parried away by Overland for a corner. In the 63rd minute in a rare Faversham attack Jordan Casey won a tackle midway in Tonbridge’s half passed out wide to Lovell who from the edge of the area chipped into the area for Casey who just got a foot to it but Henly saved it.

Three minutes later in a breakaway Liam King got free went into the area and his shot was saved by Henly but came back to King and his shot was deflected away for a corner. In the very next minute Faversham increased their lead when Walder’s corner was half cleared to George Monger who passed out wide for Walder and his cross found Matt Bourne who from 8 yards unopposed,  headed into the net.

Tonbridge now had a mountain to climb and they tried to get back into the game, in the 68th minute Craig Stone’s cross to the back post found Turner but his header was saved. In the 77th minute they got a lifeline when Sonny Miles retrieving a headed clearance from a corner crossed into the area and the referee gave a penalty for a foul, up stepped Alex Akrofi and he shot straight down the middle but Overland pushed it away.

Overland was now getting to be a busy boy, in the 80th minute Kinnear saw his 25 yard shot pushed away by Overland and in the 84th minute Tommy Whitnell put Akrofi through in the area and Overland rushed out and saved his shot with his legs. The last meaningful chance came in the 86th minute when a cross into the area found Dan Thompson but he headed wide.

The referee played 6 minutes off added on time of which Faversham defended brilliantly and saw the match out and now wait for the draw on Monday to see who they get while Tonbridge can now concentrate on the league.
