Faversham Town 2-2 AFC Whyteleafe
Faversham Town 2-2 AFC Whyteleafe

Faversham Town scrambled a draw against AFC Whyteleafe and in doing so still maintain third spot in the league though AFC Whyteleafe will be disappointed they didn’t take all three points.

The visitors had more possession and probably the better chances on balance to win but resolute defending by Faversham made sure the points were shared.

The game took a while to get going and then in the 17th minute a ball crossed from the right was half cleared to Keiron Campbell who from eighteen yards shot past Slav Huk. A minute later it was nearly two when Tommy Fagg on the right passed to Nathan Wood in the area and his cross came to Josh Ajaji and his shot was cleared off the line.

In the 23rd minute Fagg’s long ball saw Ajaji run into the area, but his goal bound shot was saved by Huk. Whyteleafe had their first real chance a minute later when Eniola Hassan beat Frankie Smith and went into the area and his shot was pushed away by Mitchell Beeney; another half chance came in the 28th minute when Heige Orome found himself in the area and his first time shot went wide.

Just after the half hour mark the crowd were amazed when a penalty was not given when Smith challenged Craig Braham Barrett in the area, but a free kick went to Faversham. In the 40th minute Faversham doubled their lead when Bradley Simms saw his long throw into the area flicked on and Fagg reacted the quickest by getting to the ball first and stabbing home from five yards.

Half time arrived and Tommy Warrilow would want more of the same while Ennio Gonnella would want his side to be more clinical.

The second half like the first took a while to get going and then in the 58th minute Whyteleafe got a goal back a ball into the area found Ryan Gondon who slipped the ball past Mitchell Beeney, two minutes later they nearly equalised when a cross to the back post saw Daniel Bennett’s header pushed around the post by Beeney.

In the 61st minute they did equalise when Aaron Barnes lost possession thirty yards away and the ball ended up at Bennett’s feet and he shot home.

Faversham now had to start again and in the 64th minute Campbell saw his twenty-five-yard free kick go just past the post. Three minutes later a long throw into the Faversham area came to Bennett and his shot from fifteen yards was superbly pushed over the bar by Beeney.

Another glorious chance came in the 71st minute when a slick move down the left wing saw the ball go across the area where Moses Emmanuel side footed effort from six yards went agonisingly past the post and in the very next minute Bennett saw his shot tipped over the bar by Beeney.

The rest of the game saw Whyteleafe in control and Faversham relying on counter attacks. There were a few scary moments for Faversham, but they held out for a point.
