Faversham Town 1-1 East Grinstead Town

A late goal from Dan Carrington was enough to end Faversham Town’s three match losing stretch, but in the end wasn’t enough to seal all three points as Ray Turner’s side were indebted to a late non-flag to get a share of the spoils.

Carrington’s first goal of the season looked like winning the game for Turner’s side only for the unmarked Chapman to power home a header from a long free kick.

Then at the death, Miller-Neave thundered a free kick off of the underside of the home crossbar with the visitors convinced that the ball had crossed the line to score, referee Dempster capped an indifferent display by waving the claims away!

Early on Ashley Miller went close for Faversham with a good shot that needed a great save from keeper Ceesay, before the keeper again denied Miller – this time with his legs after a great exchange of passes between Miller and Harry Goodger on the edge of the box.

Without really dominating, Faversham continued to create chances and next to go close was Jack Harris with a header straight at Ceesay from Ryan Cooper’s ball in.

East Grinstead’s best first half chance came courtesy of Landais who headed straight at Simon Overland when he should have done better.  Ceesay then pulled off his third decent save of the half just before the break racing from his goal-line to deny Dean Grant as he raced through.

The home side were forced into a change in goal as Overland was replaced by Tom Benham, and the stand in keeper was left motionless as Yao’s free kick was deflected a yard past the left post.

In a tough tense second half with chances becoming few and far between, Grant sent a header high over the bar, before with just nine minutes left on the clock, Carrington was on hand to open the scoring from the edge of the box.  An unmarked Chapman though spoiled things for the home side as he headed home – Turner was heard to mutter “games change with goals, games change with goals!” in his frustration.

And how prophetic the manager so nearly proved to be as Miller-Neave’s free kick thundered down off of the Faversham bar and bounced out.  East Grinstead were naturally aggrieved; Faversham and their boss left the field of play relieved…
